just uninstalled it yesterday after noticing a couple of procs running when i hadn't launched the browser. whether or not its spy/mal, it was still soaking my resources....

On a side note, I noticed that after the Chrome launch, MS "updated" their Hotmail system. Now, I can't check my Hotmail with IE8 or Firefox3. And when I click their buttons that say "Continue On" or "Inform Microsoft" they do nothing.... lol.

Now I have to use Windows Live Mail to check my Hotmail account... massivelols

one thing i keep forgetting about google is that they like to gather infomation and google analytic and the constant update is simply not worth my time switching from firefox to google chrome, un-installed 3 hours after installation, why? because more then 20 instances of googleupdate.exe was excuted during that short period of time i have it installed, simply annoying.

does a web browser really need that much update?

and at the time of the first edit of this post, google is still sneakily updating something in the background .... lol its not getting install again unless theres some special special thing

Yeah, uninstalled it too. (as did pretty much everyone else i know except one guy that has some personal issues with firefox)

Lesson learned: Technological superiority does not equate good product.

Do NOT install google chrome. It installs spyware which remains on your computer EVEN AFTER UNINSTALL and is a PAIN to remove. I would seriously stick firefox or opera until google wisens up and gets rid of the spyware. As long as there is spyware, chrome will always be an inferior product.

I believe he might have mistaked chrome updater for spyware. Or gotten other spyware installed at same time. Google is far from their "do no evil" but they are no stupid to sabotage their new product either.

(Chrome would still send your "usage statistics" to google by default, iirc)

actually they are spyware, but they say it nicely, can we get feed back from you, if so click xx button, they ask you, then you click disclaimer and its installed.

"Programs that cause your computer to display ads even when you are not using the program in question for its intended purpose, as well as those that report information about your web browsing activities to an advertising firm, are commonly known as "spyware."

but in my opinion, anything that wants to collect any sort of data is consider a spyware.

I have FF3, but haven't really installed any addons because I don't know if they make it run slower. I had the weather one, but from November to March it would pop up constantly with "Severe Weather Alert, New Haven Connecticut!", when it was blatantly sunny and nice outside.

It IS spyware. And furthermore, it is not removed EVEN AFTER YOU UNINSTALL. Please don't stick your head up your *** and assume. You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

You can do that in Firefox as well. I didn't know that, but I really didn't care.

Okay, how does this spyware work, Oh Allmighty Knowing One. If you *KNOW* it is there, show us how to find it too, don't be shy and call out where it is, what is its process name, what it does and why it makes you QQ.

Of course, you are only repeating someones baseless FUDs because otherwise you would provide specifics.

If someone is curious, this is ultimate list of all Chrome stuff that might be considered spyware-ish: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/google...communication/

Taking a stab at the dark here but do you believe the Google Updater Program that runs in the background to be "spyware"?

The Google Updater program can be removed if you aren't a complete idiot with computers and know how to find files.

GoogleUpdate: When you install Google Chrome, GoogleUpdate is also installed. GoogleUpdate makes sure that your copy of Google Chrome is kept up to date, so that when updates are released your version is automatically updated without any action required on your part. This is especially important to make sure that users are protected by the latest security fixes that Google releases. As part of these update checks, two unique, randomly generated IDs are sent, along with information such as version number, language, operating system, and other install or update-related details. This information helps us accurately count total users, and is not associated with you or your Google Account. More information is available in the Google Chrome help center. GoogleUpdate cannot be disabled from within Google Chrome. GoogleUpdate is automatically uninstalled on the next update check (typically every few hours) after the last Google product using it is uninstalled.

Uh, no, do you know how to read lol? If you actually bothered reading ANYTHING, you'd know that you GAVE them permission to install Spyware onto your computer. I don't need to provide any other reference, because the reference is Google and they are not even denying it. Just read the EULA to see how bad it really is.

This was not the case at the time I posted. (It has since been changed) Furthermore there's no realy reason to have this process anyway. It's a waste of memory that serves no useful function.

Huh. I thought I had another post. Either I didn't post it, or something else happened.

Anyway, for the most part, auto updaters are not spyware; auto updaters just update the software automatically. There are, obviously, exceptions, but for the most part this is true. According to the EULA posted, information is sent (such as build, OS, etc), but aren't associated with you. Also, because of the way most auto updaters are set up, you can choose to do the update, or choose not to do the update. Spyware, on the other hand, do not give you a choice.

Auto-updating all Google software is useful to me.
